Manta rays pass Nusa Penida most reliably between April and October. Here is how we plan a morning around them.
Guests ask about mantas more than anything else, so here is the honest version.
The window runs roughly April to October, and the reliable spot is Manta Point on the south-west coast — about forty minutes by boat from Banjar Nyuh. Outside that window they still appear, just less predictably.
Go early
Boats leave between 7 and 8 in the morning. Water is flattest then, the light is better, and you are back at the cottage by lunch with the whole afternoon still ahead of you. The later trips fight both the swell and the crowd.
What to bring
- A rash guard rather than sunscreen — the reef prefers it, and so do the mantas
- Something warm and dry for the boat ride back
- Motion sickness tablets if you are unsure; the crossing can be lively
We book the boats for guests directly. Tell us your dates when you reserve a room and we will hold a place.
